William Jansz

HGAR Affiliate of the Year

When William Jansz heard his name called for HGAR “Affiliate of the Year” at the Annual Meeting at Members Day last month, he couldn’t believe his own ears. “I was listening to the speech about the winner and was completely shocked when they said my name,” admitted Jansz.

The Trustco Bank Senior Officer, Branch Administration revealed he had no idea that he was even being considered for the award. “I was so surprised and so honored. It was really extraordinary,” he said.

Jansz recently celebrated 15 years with Trustco Bank, a long-time HGAR Affiliate member, sponsor and advertiser. Trustco opened its first location back in 1902 in upstate New York and today has 148 branch locations on the East Coast and assets of over $4.9 billion.

Originally from Sri Lanka, Jansz came to the U.S. in 1998, joining his wife’s family in Westchester County. He grew up bilingual, speaking the country’s native Sinhalese language and English. “My ancestry is also from the Netherlands. My great grandparents were from Holland, so you don’t find many people with my last name living in Sri Lanka,” he explained.

Jansz describes his homeland as very westernized, and he found the transition to America seamless. He also traveled quite a bit to Europe, visiting his brother who lives in Switzerland.

Prior to his banking career, Jansz worked in the textile industry in Sri Lanka. When he came to the U.S., he switched careers rather quickly after the birth of his daughter, Emily. “There was a lot of travel involved in that industry and I wanted to be closer to home with the new baby,” he said.

He began working in the restaurant business and then made the move to banking after landing a job as a teller at the Trustco Bank in Bedford Hills in 2003. “My wife worked in banking, so I thought that I’d try that as well,” he said. It was actually a job fair that led him to his Trustco career.

From teller, he was later promoted to head teller, then to assistant branch manager, and finally manager. Jansz then went through all three levels of manager and three years ago became the Senior Officer for Branch Administration. “I was eager to grow the company and I love working with people,” he added

Today, Jansz is responsible for overseeing all of the Trustco branches in Westchester, Putnam, Dutchess, Rockland, Ulster, Columbia and Green counties in New York, as well as the Berkshires in Massachusetts. His home office is in Katonah now and he frequently travels to the other locations.

“Our main focus is development and growth, getting our managers involved in networking and in the communities they serve,” he explained. “I also like to mentor and coach them, helping them in their daily business.”

Jansz said as they grow their mortgage business, they want to ensure that easily transitioning clients into their new homes is their top priority. “We have a very good reputation in dealing with new homeowners and I want to make sure that my team sees everything through from beginning to end,” he said.

In his spare time, Jansz likes to travel to California and Florida, and enjoys spending time at his Somers home with his wife Sheahara, daughter Emily, 19, son Ethan, 17, and their two toy poodles Bently and Kooper.

“I just love the opportunity I have with the bank and living here in New York, and again, I’m so touched for being chosen as HGAR’s ‘Affiliate of the Year’.”
