PRESIDENT'S CORNER: Plenty of Opportunities Available for Service
Barry Kramer | January 2018
Happy New Year! I would like to thank the members of HGAR for their confidence in electing me as their 2018 President. It’s quite an honor and privilege to serve such a great association.
I have some big footsteps to follow. My predecessor Dorothy Botsoe did an awesome job and had us all drinking tea with the President! I want to thank Dorothy for all her dedication and her commitment to reach out to hear what members were thinking. These networking opportunities will help contribute to our agenda in the years ahead. Job well done.
As I begin my term I am often asked why I decided to take on this new responsibility. Frankly, I’ve always been someone who has contributed to my community. Whether it’s serving as co-op Board President for the past 33 years or advocating for Realtor issues, I’ve always been willing to give freely of my time, giving back and making a difference. It’s just always been a priority for me.
About 20 years ago, former Westchester County Board of Realtors President Hank Fries asked me if I wanted to serve on a state committee. I immediately jumped at the chance, and with Hank as my mentor, I began my work on the NYSAR legislative committee and soon joined others.
With Hank in mind, I’ve made it one of my goals in these first few weeks of the year to reach out and invite members to participate and give of their time to help our association. One of my priorities is to expand the participation in our HGAR committees. We learned from last year’s networking events that our members want to be more involved and have more of a voice in what’s happening.
By now I hope you’ve received our e-mail that offers the opportunity to sign up for a committee. We have plenty of opportunities for everyone. We have some very experienced Committee Chairs and Co-chairs and I thank them for their willingness to serve.
So what committee interests you? One of my favorites has always been the Legislative Council since I’ve always been involved in politics and feel it’s important to advocate for issues that are important to me. I’ve also been involved in the Fair Housing and Cultural Diversity Committee, and if you would like to get involved in our global initiatives this would be a great committee to join.
There are many others to consider. If you like improving member communications consider the Member Experience Committee, or if you would like to plan informative events, please consider our Broker-Owner-Manager-Member Events Committee. Our Education offerings have really grown over the past few years due to the hard work of our Education Council. If you’re young or young at heart consider our fantastic YPN (Young Professionals Network). If you’re not sure where to join or want information on some of our other great committees and councils feel free to contact me and I’d be happy to help!
In addition to many HGAR-sponsored events, we had some great networking and fundraising events organized by our RPAC Committee and the Realtor Foundation. Both had their most successful years ever in 2017 and we are so proud of what they’ve accomplished. If you’d like to join in their success please consider participating in RPAC or the Hudson Gateway Relator Foundation.
Being involved on a committee isn’t for everyone and that’s OK. Even if you’re not interested in joining a committee you can help out by attending one of our seminars, fundraising events or other events. While I’d like to encourage everyone to be a participant in one of our committees, just being there to support our hard work is appreciated!
